A CANOPY OF ARRIVALS
ABOUT THE PROJECT
Welcome to “A Canopy of Arrivals,” a data arts installation that explores over a century of immigration in Toledo, Ohio from 1840 to present day.
At the turn of the twentieth century, immigration was transforming the United States. From the peak of the California Gold Rush in 1848 to the closing of New York’s Ellis Island in 1954, a century of demographic change made modern America. The land between the coasts was no exception, where immigration shaped industry, culture, neighborhoods and everyday life. Toledo, Ohio embodies the quintessential American city, a landscape built from the industrial dreams and hard work of citizens national and international alike.Â
Across time and different waves of immigration, people from different countries of origin came to live in Toledo. After decades of population growth — among both native and foreign-born residents — Toledo reached its peak total population in 1970. In the decades that followed, the city’s overall numbers declined, and while the foreign-born population also decreased, it did so in distinct ways that reflected broader forces — locally, nationally and globally. In this modern era, as Toledo transformed into a post-industrial rust belt city and wars developed overseas, the people and the places Toledo’s new residents came from began to shift.
Through these exhibits, we illustrate the journeys made by the many who came to call Toledo home.
